Another band of loyalist join them in the morning, taking the total to 60 followers. For breakfast, they decide to have bamboo sticks. Unfortunately, he has only 47 bamboo sticks, all of them identical cylinders. Anxious to evenly distribute the 47 sticks amongst themselves, Tintin decides to cut the sticks with his sword. What is the minimum number of times that Tintin has to use his sword to share the 47 bamboo sticks between all 60 of them, knowing that each of them must receive identical parts.
Note : A sword can be used to break mutliple sticks at a time.

Since Tintin can use sword to break multiple in a go. He would align all the sticks in a line, and use the sword to cut them to half each.
So he can get 74 (out of which 60 would be used) in one go.

The ans is 3 though i was in junior squad but i would like to post the ans!

I also think the ans shud be 1.. Coz its ok if wr hav extra sticks.. We can use 60 outta 94.. N it was nt asked tat we hav to give bamboo sticks as long as possible..

We can cut a cylinder into 60 parts in 8 cuts...

The answer is 8
To divide equally, each should get 47/60 part of a stick
Take 45, cut them into 3/4 and 1/4 parts (1 cut), leaving you with a total of 60x3/4 parts Give one to each
Take 2, cut both into half (1 cut), cut each half into 3 (2 cuts) and each third into 5 (4 cuts) giving 60x1/30 parts. Give one to each
3/4+1/30=45/60+2/60=47/60
So answer is 1+1+2+4=8
